Barley Porridge

Grains are very popular in Eastern Europe. If you are travelling anywhere in Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania or Belarus you are bound to see fields of barley, wheat or rye. You can do so much with them! Usually, they are used to make flour. I love to eat oatmeal for breakfast so I wanted to experiment with one of my favorite grains- finely ground barley. It came out great! It’s delicious, filling but fresh at the same time and with a nice nutty crunch.


It is very important to rinse barley before making it, otherwise it may turn bitter.


Pour milk over porridge, bring to boil and simmer for around 25- 30 min until it has oatmeal-like consistency. Cover with your favorite toppings. Options are endless- it can basically be any fruit or nuts, honey, agave syrup, sugar and any kind of milk you prefer. Get creative. and enjoy!

  • 1 cup of finely ground barley
  • 2 1/2 cups of milk (cow, almond or coconut)
  • 1 peach
  • 1 banana
  • 1 Tablespoon of honey
  • Handful of almonds and cashews


  1. Rinse and drain barley.
  2. Bring milk and barley to boil and simmer for about 25-30 minutes.
  3. Cover with fruit and your toppings.
