Crazy easy and addictive orange cookies. The chances are you have all the ingredients in your fridge and pantry already. They are delicate and buttery and orange juice and zest make them anything but boring.
We got some much snow in Chicago this last couple on days which is so crazy because we got away with murder this season, there was barely any snow and the second you put away your winter coat, boom! That’s okay though. The spring will come eventually. Plus, cold weather is a perfect excuse to eat cookies so let’s do this!
I started with grating orange peel. Then I simply mixed all of the ingredients- flour, sugar, eggs, sour cream, baking powder, butter and half of the orange zest (the other half we will add to the icing). I used softened butter, I chopped it into bigger pieces and took out of the fridge 1 hour before kneading the dough. You can also do it in the microwave, don’t melt it all the way though.
Next step is rolling out the dough pretty thin and cutting out cookies.
They can be any shape you want. If you are making bigger cookies, however, you might have to bake them for an additional minute or two to ensure they’re not raw inside.
I baked the cookies at 350 F for about 10 minutes.
In the meantime, I prepared the orange icing. I decided to replace water or milk in regular icing with orange juice to give the cookies even more citrusy flavor. I mixed powdered sugar with 3 tablespoons of freshly squeezed juice and the remaining half of the orange zest. If the icing feels to runny add more powdered sugar, if too stiff add some orange juice.
Finally I covered cooled cookies with icing and let it harden a bit.

- 2 cups of flour
- 1 stick of butter
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of sour cream
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 orange (zest and juice)
- 1 cup of powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons of orange juice
- zest of half an orange
- Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- Mix flour, eggs, sugar, sour cream, softened butter, sugar and zest from half an orange.
- Roll out the dough thin and cut out the cookies.
- Bake cookies for about 10 minutes.
- In the meantime prepare the icing with powdered sugar, orange juice and the rest of the zest.
- Cool cookies and cover each with icing. Wait a few minutes until the icing hardens. Enjoy!
